Dogma, defined by Cambridge: “[A] fixed belief or set of beliefs that people are expected to accept without any doubts.”

Core Competencies of Government

Government has a number of legitimate purposes in society. Those legitimate purposes are what I call its “Core Competencies.” As a matter of policy, staff time and taxpayer resources should be directed towards the Core Competencies of government first, then non-core areas as funds are available. A council member maintains the public purse. Our city “purse” totals $1,000,000,000 (that’s 1 Billion Dollars)!  Much of that sum is funded with debt to be paid out over 1.5 generations, placing an unfair and immoral burden on our children.

Fiscal and ethical stewardship of the public purse requires two complementary and essential elements: diligence and trust.

Diligence is the willingness to read every financial document, demand information where lacking, and double check every total.

Open Government

Transparency is one of the most critical components of good governance. Without an open and publicly informed process, there is no way to verify if actions taken by elected officials and staff are true to their purposes and stated outcomes, however good those might be.
